Where to look for accommodation in Hamburg:
The city of Hamburg provides some comprehensive information and links on this site If you scroll down, they also have an integrated map, by clicking on “Karte vergrößern” (enlarge map) you can enter the address of KLU (Großer Grasbrook 17, 20457 Hamburg) into the search field and will see that KLU really is quite in the center of Hamburg.
Popular among students are the areas of Altona/Ottensen, Sternschanze, or Eimsbüttel, all more to the west of Hamburg. Flats/Flatshares are quite popular and competition and rent prices can be quite high. Areas like Barmbek, Wandsbek, more to the north of Hamburg, or Hamm to the east, can be a bit easier to find something and a little cheaper.
Although currently finding something in Hamburg anywhere is unfortunately quite a challenge, both for Germans and people from abroad. Rent in the areas south of the river Elbe, Wilhelmsburg and Harburg, is a bit lower as well and with the “S-Bahn” it is also not a long commute to KLU. They are not among the most popular areas of Hamburg, yet, but more and more people move there as well nowadays.
Depending on your budget, it can be advisable to look for alternatives outside the city center. Hamburg has a safe, reliable and well-connected public transportation system, so that every district can be reached easily. A 30-45 min ride (or longer) from home to university is not unusual. As you will receive a transportation ticket valid for the whole area of Hamburg, you might want to search in less popular areas as well. Of course, we recommend looking for an apartment with a good connection to KLU, e.g. near underground stations of “U-Bahn” lines that allow switching to the U4 line. When looking for private offers, we advise some caution especially with offers that sound almost too good to be true. We have listed a few “red flags” in the presentation above.
